Personal, Social and Health and Economic Education (incl RSE)

The information below describes our rationale for teaching PSHE & RSE in our school.

a. Who leads this subject?

b. PSHE Curriculum Intent

Within a Christian context, the school's PSHE curriculum enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society.  It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.  We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be part of a diverse society.  Our children are encouraged to develop a sense of self-worth and play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

c. PSHE Knowledge Boards

Our curriculum delivers and goes beyond the National Curriculum for PSHE, which ncludes the statutory expectations for RSE and Mental Health (Wellbeing).

We use nationally available SCARF PSHE scheme based on the content from the PSHE Association It provides a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum.  We use the scheme and personalise it to meet the needs of our children and our RSE Policy.  Alongside the SCARF scheme we also use a progamme Kidsafe which develops pupils knowledge and understanding in safeguarding and mental health.  The school is a regional training host for the charity Kidsafe UK.

d. Relationships and Sex Education

The DfE have published guidance for Relationships and Sex Education.  Schools are required to deliver the new guidance from September 2020.  We have utilised diocesan guidance in reviewing our policy and its delivery.  We  consulted parents in a number of ways regarding the new policy until 19th March 2020. Any views and questions were valued and communicated to parents who requested it or by attending our February 2020 Parents Forum meeting. 

The Governing Body have a statutory requirement to decide whether or not sex education
should form part of the school curriculum.  At St Margaret's they have decided that it should be in our curriculum.

Sex & Relationships Education is not considered as a separate subject but will be addressed in the following manner:

• Incorporated into the P.S.H.E. programme of work
• As part of the Science Curriculum incorporated within the subjects of growth and development
• Issues will be addressed as they occur naturally in the classroom and questions are answered in an appropriate manner with due regard to the
  children’s level of maturity
• The ethos of the school encourages self respect and caring and loving attitudes towards each other
• Annually Year 5 pupils are given a talk by a qualified school nurse on the subject of personal hygiene and puberty. Parents are consulted before
  such talks are given and may withdraw their child/children if they so desire.

The school encourages caring relationships within the doctrine of the Church whilst accepting that our children come from a variety of forms of family unit.

After consulting the policy, the leaflet of the content covered and speaking with the Headteacher, should you not wish your child to be present during Sex & Relationship sessions you should notify the Headteacher in writing. If no written notification is received your child will receive Sex & Relationship Education.

f. PSHE Statutory Guidance for Curriculum Purpose

To embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Pupils can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives. These subjects can support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support.
High quality, evidence-based and age-appropriate teaching of these subjects can help prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. They can also enable schools to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, at school and in society.
